View glossary →In a gas installation for pouring beer, pressure drops in two stages — from the gas cylinder to the tap. Both stages use a pressure regulator, but with a different function.
The primary regulator is mounted directly on the gas cylinder or bank. Its job is to convert the high and variable cylinder pressure (which drops as the cylinder empties) into a stable, lower intermediate pressure toward the rest of the installation. This is also the most important safety component in the system.
Further down the line, usually just before a tap wall or specific zone, a secondary regulator brings that intermediate pressure to the exact pour pressure. In installations with multiple tap walls or longer distances between cylinder and tap, a secondary regulator compensates for the pressure loss that occurs along the way, so every tap delivers the same pour quality.
A simple installation with a single tap wall close to the gas cylinder can sometimes work with just a primary regulator. Once an installation has multiple tap walls, longer lines or several zones, a secondary regulator per zone is the standard approach for guaranteeing consistent pressure at every tap point.
