How it works

From gas cylinder to tap: two stages, one stable pressure.

Primary regulator

Mounted on the gas cylinder or bank, the primary regulator reduces cylinder pressure (which can run into hundreds of bar) to a workable intermediate pressure toward the installation. This is the first and most important safety step in the system.

Secondary regulator

Further down the line, often per tap wall or zone, a secondary regulator brings the intermediate pressure down to the exact pour pressure. In installations with multiple taps or longer runs, this compensates for pressure loss and ensures consistent pour quality at every point.

What is the difference between a primary and secondary CO2 regulator?

A primary regulator reduces pressure directly from the gas cylinder or bank down to a workable intermediate pressure. A secondary regulator further reduces that intermediate pressure to the exact pour pressure per tap or line. In installations with multiple taps or long runs, a secondary regulator per zone is often added to compensate for pressure loss.

Can the same regulator be used for CO2 and N2?

Some regulator series are suited to CO2, N2 and mixed gas, others are built specifically per gas type. Material choice and seals determine this. Always state the gas type and working pressure in your request so we can propose the correct version.

How often does a pressure regulator need servicing or replacement?

This depends on usage intensity and environment, but a periodic visual check (gauge, connections, valve action) is recommended. If you doubt the regulator's operation or see visible wear, replacing the regulator or its parts is advisable.
